EC&M Tech Talk Video — EV Opportunities, Installation, and Maintenance

Sept. 2, 2022
In this video (Episode 18), Randy Barnett discusses EV transfer systems.

In this episode of “EC&M Tech Talk,” Randy Barnett, a journeyman electrician, inspector, author, trainer, and electrical safety expert, provides an overview of the opportunities, installation, and maintenance requirements for electric vehicle (EV) power transfer systems.

With the 2021 passage of the Infrastructure Bill, $7.5 billion has been earmarked for the installation of electric vehicle charging systems over the next few years throughout the United States. The installations must be done by qualified persons, and maintenance will be required. Many electrical opportunities abound, especially for installation and maintenance of commercial electric vehicle supply equipment.

The three levels of EV charging are explained in this video. Level 3 charging systems typically require 480V for operation and are often found in public locations. Expanding these installations is a must to keep pace with charging requirements for a growing electric vehicle market. Such 480V systems will require electrical services capable of meeting the load requirements. Underground distribution from the premises wiring system supplies this equipment in commercial locations. Article 625 of the National Electrical Code provides the installation requirements.

The 2019 NFPA 70B, Recommended Practice for Electrical Equipment Maintenance, provides maintenance guidelines, which are reviewed in the video as well. This Tech Talk video provides an overview for all electrical professionals interested in the EV market.
