In this episode of “EC&M Tech Talks,” Randy Barnett, a journeyman electrician, inspector, author, trainer, and electrical safety expert, provides an overview of the changes to the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC).
The key to using the NEC is terminology. Article 100, Definitions has undergone an extensive formatting change. All definitions from throughout the Code have been moved to Art. 100. No longer divided into Parts, all terms appear in alphabetical order. Definitions that apply only to a specific Article have the appropriate Article number enclosed in parenthesis at the end of the definition.
Some of the specific items addressed in the Tech Talk include the addition of cybersecurity to Sec 110.3 for judging equipment and a change in terminology in Sec. 110.12 – mechanical execution of work must now be performed in a “professional and skillful” manner rather than “neat and workmanlike.” In Chapter 2, Art. 240 now prohibits overcurrent protective devices in not just dwelling unit bathrooms, but all bathrooms, showering facilities, and locker rooms with showering facilities.
Overall, information that previously appeared as a specific Part in different articles covering equipment, systems, wiring methods and materials rated for over 1,000V, now has been moved to new Articles addressing these topics for over 1,000VAC, 1,500VDC. Even if you do not yet have your copy of the 2023 NEC, use this Tech Talk to begin to understand some of the overall 2023 changes and identify some specific topics you will want to later address in more detail.
